Says Nigeria’s foreign relations, security coordination have collapsed under APC administration

A policy analyst has raised fresh concerns over what he described as the collapse of Nigeria’s diplomatic structures and the growing consolidation of terrorist groups in parts of the North.
Speaking in an interview monitored by The Newspointer, the expert faulted the Federal Government for leaving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs without substantive ambassadors for nearly two years, saying the lapse has crippled Nigeria’s foreign engagements and weakened its presence on the global stage.
“For two years, Nigerians didn’t have ambassadors. So how do you conduct diplomacy without envoys to represent and defend national interests abroad?” he asked.
He explained that several bilateral and multilateral commissions, responsible for reviewing cooperation agreements on security, trade, and foreign partnerships, have not convened for over 12 years.
“Diplomacy is not just about a phone call between presidents. There are institutional channels and review mechanisms before a policy is made. Those structures have been paralyzed under this administration,” he added.
Turning to the worsening insecurity in the North, the analyst warned that extremist groups have now developed the capacity to form a de facto state similar to ISIS in parts of Katsina, Kebbi, Kaduna, and Zamfara States.
“They have the capacity to declare this territory a state like ISIS. When that happens, the killings will escalate. The real crisis is not now—it will come when that state is declared,” he cautioned.
He also faulted government claims of progress in the war against terrorism, citing data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicating that the number of reported killings in the first six months of this year doubled compared to the same period last year.
“Someone is clearly not telling Nigerians the truth. It’s definitely not Amnesty International or the NBS, which have institutional responsibilities to provide accurate data,” he stated.
