A major political shake-up may soon hit Taraba State as several lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at both the National Assembly and the Taraba State House of Assembly are reportedly preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Findings by The NEWSPOINTER on Sunday indicate that the lawmakers have entered advanced discussions with APC leaders, with the planned crossover described as “imminent and significant.” Though the exact number of legislators involved remains unclear, party insiders say the movement is large enough to heighten anxiety within the PDP.
Multiple sources attributed the planned defection to internal wrangling, alleged exclusion in party decision-making, and dissatisfaction with the PDP’s current leadership structure in the state. Some lawmakers are said to be uncomfortable with changes introduced during ongoing party realignments.
The development comes amid rising political recalculations influenced by Governor Agbu Kefas’ policy direction and growing profile. Although the governor remains a key PDP figure, observers believe shifting alliances around his administration have triggered fresh manoeuvres within the party.
APC officials in Jalingo confirmed that the opposition party is in talks with the lawmakers, adding that the move reflects “the declining confidence in the PDP’s leadership in Taraba.” One APC chieftain who spoke on condition of anonymity said the defectors would be formally received soon.
In the PDP camp, the mood is tense. Senior party officials have reportedly held several closed-door meetings aimed at resolving grievances and preventing an exodus that could weaken the ruling party. Negotiations, reconciliatory offers, and renewed political assurances are underway.
Analysts warn that if the planned defections materialise, it could alter the political balance in the state, particularly within the legislature. The APC, which has struggled to expand its influence in Taraba, may gain strategic advantages ahead of the 2027 elections.
