The Gombe Network of Civil Society Organisations (GONET) has raised alarm over renewed security threats across Nigeria, particularly in the northern states, where banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on schools have sparked fear and disrupted communities.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Amb. Ibrahim Yusuf, and Secretary, Mr. Benjamin Maina, GONET urged Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious, and political differences and unite against insecurity. The coalition warned that continued division could leave a fractured nation for future generations.
“In times like these, national division is a luxury we cannot afford. Terrorism knows no tribe, no religion, and no political party. We encourage all citizens to collectively condemn violence, insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry,” the statement read.
The civil society network called on federal, state, and local governments, as well as traditional leaders, school boards, and community groups, to strengthen measures that protect schools and other vulnerable areas.
“Communities must take ownership of local security through vigilance committees, intelligence sharing, and early warning systems. When communities provide timely information, security agencies respond more effectively. Security is everyone’s business,” GONET added.
Expressing solidarity with families affected by abductions, the network urged security agencies to maintain proactive efforts until all abducted children are safely returned and perpetrators are brought to justice.
