The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised strong opposition to the proposed Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Bill, announcing an emergency meeting to discuss the legislation.
The notice, issued on Wednesday by the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, stated that the sole agenda of the meeting is to deliberate on the bill, which recently passed its second reading in the Nigerian Senate.
The NSITF Bill, sponsored by Senator Fasuyi Cyril of Ekiti State, seeks to repeal the existing NSITF Act and replace it with the Nigeria Social Security Trust Fund Act 2025. The union described the bill as “ill-motivated and ill-advised,” warning that its passage would undermine the objectives of the NSITF.
Upah told Newspointer, “We are strongly opposed to the bill. It threatens the letter and spirit of what the NSITF is meant to achieve.”
Similarly, the organised private sector has voiced concerns over the legislation, arguing that it would primarily benefit the government at the expense of employees and other stakeholders.
