Bauchi Stands Still as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Is Laid to Rest

Bauchi stood still on Friday as thousands of mourners, alongside top government officials and religious leaders, converged on the state capital for the burial of renowned Islamic scholar and Tijjaniyya leader, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led the Federal Government delegation to the funeral prayer, following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Also present were Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Niger State Governor Umaru Bago, ministers, members of the National Assembly, state legislators, traditional rulers, and prominent Islamic clerics from across the country.

The jana’iza prayer was led by Maiduguri-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Saleh, and held at the Bauchi Eid Ground at exactly 4:36 p.m. The event attracted an enormous gathering of sympathisers from within and outside Nigeria, underscoring the late Sheikh’s immense influence.

Mourners had been arriving in Bauchi since Thursday morning following the announcement of his death, reflecting his towering scholarship, spiritual depth, and national and international relevance.

Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, a centenarian, passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital. His death triggered an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, religious institutions, and followers of the Tijjaniyya order worldwide.

He is survived by 60 children, many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The revered scholar was laid to rest at his residence in Makera, Bauchi, amid tears, prayers, and glowing tributes from followers and admirers who described his death as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s religious landscape and the global Muslim community.
