The Kwara State Fire Service has successfully contained a late-night fire outbreak on Obo Road, behind the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) office in Ilorin, preventing what could have resulted in extensive commercial losses.
The incident occurred at about 11:57 p.m. on Sunday, November 30, 2025, and affected five out of about 25 clustered kiosks in the area before firefighters arrived. Prompt response by operatives of the service ensured that the fire was brought under control, stopping it from spreading to adjoining shops.
In a statement signed by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Service, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge, which ignited flammable materials stored in the affected kiosks.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, while reacting to the incident, cautioned traders and shop owners to take electrical safety seriously, especially in areas where shops are closely packed.
“We appeal to traders to install surge protectors, avoid illegal electrical connections and routinely check their wiring systems,” he said, noting that most fire incidents are preventable with strict adherence to safety measures.
Prince Falade further observed that many market clusters operate with unregulated power loads, making them vulnerable to power surges and overheating.
The Kwara State Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state, emphasizing that continuous public enlightenment remains vital to reducing fire outbreaks and related losses.
