The Northern States Governors’ Forum has reiterated its strong support for the establishment of state police as part of measures to address the worsening security challenges confronting the region.
The resolution was reached on Monday during a joint meeting of the Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held in Kaduna. The meeting was chaired by the Governor of Gombe State and Chairman of the Forum, Inuwa Yahaya.
The governors, representing the 19 northern states, expressed deep condolences to the governments and people of Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa and Kano states over recent incidents involving killings, kidnappings and abductions of schoolchildren and other innocent citizens.
The Forum again threw its weight behind the creation of state police, calling on members of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to expedite the necessary legislative processes to ensure its realization.
As part of a coordinated regional response to insecurity, the governors resolved to establish a Regional Security Trust Fund, to be funded with a monthly contribution of ₦1 billion from each state and local government.
They also recommended a six-month suspension of mining exploration activities across the region to curb security challenges linked to illegal mining operations.
The Forum commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts toward securing the release of abducted children and strengthening the fight against insurgency and other criminal activities.
The governors emphasized that addressing threats such as banditry, kidnapping and insurgent attacks would require unity, cooperation and sustained commitment among states, security agencies and the Federal Government.
