Badaru’s Resignation – Dec. 2nd 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down from office citing health challenges.
Badaru conveyed his decision in a resignation letter dated December 1 and addressed to the President, explaining that health-related issues had made it difficult for him to continue in office. The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
President Tinubu, while accepting the resignation, appreciated Badaru for what he described as his dedication and service during a critical period in the nation’s security management. The President noted that the former minister contributed meaningfully to the administration’s efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

According to the Presidency, President Tinubu will soon forward the name of a new nominee for the position of Minister of Defence to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Badaru, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment into the federal cabinet on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a time when the Federal Government has declared a national security emergency, with further policy measures expected to be announced in the coming days.
A senior government source said the resignation would not affect ongoing security reforms, assuring that the administration remains committed to strengthening the nation’s defence sector.
