The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria, pledging increased investment and enhanced security support as part of its priorities for 2026.
The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, made this known at the EU End-of-Year Media Parley held in Abuja, where he reviewed the bloc’s achievements in 2025 and outlined plans for the coming year.

Mignot described Nigeria as a strategic partner, noting that it remains the EU’s largest trading partner in Africa, with an estimated trade surplus of about 10 billion dollars. He added that EU investments currently account for nearly one-third of Nigeria’s total foreign direct investment.
Highlighting key interventions in 2025, the Ambassador said the EU funded the OMI-EKO electric water transport project in Lagos with about 410 million euros, launched new health initiatives worth 41 million euros, and committed 30 million euros to the Africa-Europe culture and creative industries programme.
In collaboration with ECOWAS, the EU also committed 100 million euros to peace, security, and governance initiatives, and rolled out the Nigeria Jubilee Fellowship Programme to provide one-year workplace placements for 25,000 graduates.
He further disclosed that the EU supported thousands of young technology entrepreneurs through Digital Transformation Centres and provided more than 50 million euros in humanitarian assistance to address malnutrition in parts of Northern Nigeria.
Mignot stated that young Nigerians are central to EU programmes, adding that the country ranks first in Africa and fifth globally in Erasmus scholarship awards.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Ambassador said the EU plans to convene an EU–Nigeria Ministerial Meeting, expand the Global Gateway Strategy including a 90,000-kilometre optic fibre rollout under the BRIDGE project, and launch an 18-million-euro programme to tackle technology-facilitated sexual and gender-based violence.
He added that a new peace, security, and defence dialogue is expected to unlock European Peace Facility funding, while negotiations for a Science, Technology, and Innovation Agreement, a migration and mobility partnership, and a major EU–Nigeria Business Forum will also be pursued.
According to him, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights will remain the cornerstone of EU–Nigeria relations.
“Our goal is to support Nigeria to thrive as a stable, democratic, and prosperous partner, while ensuring a fair and predictable environment for investment,” Mignot said.
