Bauchi State, on Wednesday, joined other states of the federation in the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons with Disabilities, with 250 beneficiaries in the state receiving ₦200,000 each to boost their small businesses.
The programme, which was held at the Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu Square, Bauchi, formed part of activities marking the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Speaking at the event, the Bauchi State First Lady, Hajiya Aishatu Bala Mohammed, who represented the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, said the initiative underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive development and the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
She explained that the scheme was being implemented simultaneously across the 36 states of the country, the Federal Capital Territory and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Associations.
According to her, 250 persons with disabilities in each state and the FCT are to benefit from the ₦200,000 grant, bringing the total number of beneficiaries nationwide to 9,500, while about ₦50m was allocated to each state and participating organisation for disbursement.
She urged the beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds to improve their livelihoods, stressing the importance of unity and collective progress, as echoed by disability rights advocate, Helen Keller.
The Bauchi First Lady also said the Renewed Hope Initiative had extended support to more than 100,000 petty women traders, rolled out agricultural empowerment programmes, provided welfare support to widows and orphans of fallen security personnel, and sustained monthly food outreach programmes across 22 states, the FCT and some internally displaced persons’ camps.
She commended the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, for creating an enabling environment for the successful implementation of social welfare programmes in the state.
Some of the beneficiaries, including Bala Bagalewu and Hauwa’u Shehu, expressed gratitude to the Federal and Bauchi State Governments, describing the intervention as timely and unprecedented.
Also speaking, a community leader of persons with disabilities, Tata Mohammed, advised beneficiaries to invest the grants wisely and embrace self-reliance.
The event ended with a call for sustained inclusion and assurances that persons with disabilities would remain central to the Renewed Hope agenda.
