As part of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the Minister has urged faith leaders across the country to step up advocacy efforts to protect vulnerable groups. The call came during a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, which brought together leaders from different religious communities.
The Minister said religious institutions have a unique role in shaping societal values and influencing behavior. “Faith leaders can set the tone for communities and help reduce abuse and discrimination,” he stated.
He added that advocacy should go beyond sermons, including community outreach, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with government agencies and civil society organizations to ensure the message reaches the grassroots.
Faith leaders were also encouraged to support survivors by providing counseling, safe spaces, and guidance on accessing legal remedies. The Minister noted that early intervention can prevent escalation and save lives.
The Minister highlighted the importance of interfaith collaboration, urging leaders from different religious backgrounds to work together, share best practices, and promote awareness about the consequences of gender-based violence.
The forum ended with a commitment from faith leaders to actively participate in programs during the 16 Days of Activism, demonstrating their role in creating safer communities for women, children, and vulnerable groups.
Stakeholders commended the initiative, noting that faith-based advocacy can complement government efforts to end gender-based violence and promote social equity.
