The Taraba State Magistrate Court in Jalingo has issued an arrest warrant for a social media activist, Abdulmumuni Imam, over allegations of defamation against the Minister of State for Regional Development, Barrister Uba Maigari.
Imam, in a viral post on his verified Facebook page, alleged that the minister diverted ₦16.5 billion earmarked for the reconstruction of the Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State — an accusation he claimed was responsible for the delay in the commencement of work on the bridge.
Counsel to the minister, Dr. Ibrahim Effiong Esq., while briefing journalists in Jalingo on Friday, said the self-acclaimed activist made unsubstantiated claims that have pitched the minister against the people of the state and caused severe damage to his reputation.

Effiong stressed that his client’s intention is solely to ensure Imam appears before the court to substantiate his allegations and allow the records to be set straight.
“My client, the Honourable Minister of State for Regional Development, has been inundated with social media reports credited to one Abdulmumuni Imam, alleging the diversion of over ₦16.5 billion meant for reconstructing the Namnai Bridge that collapsed last year.
“As a reputable legal luminary and a law-abiding citizen, the minister wants the man to prove his claims before the court. He was invited, but instead of appearing, he returned to social media alleging that security operatives were after him. We did not involve any security agency; we approached the court,” Effiong said.
He emphasized the need for accountability in the social media space, noting that freedom of speech must be exercised responsibly to protect its integrity.
“I think it is important for people to be held responsible for their content on social media. Yes, we have freedom of speech, but it comes with responsibility. Activism also requires bravery and accountability. If you attack others under the guise of activism, you should have no questionable character. I don’t understand why he is running from the court, which is for everyone.
“This is not about seeking compensation or damages. It’s not about money. It is about setting the records straight. The Honourable Minister is not above the law. If Imam proves the allegations, the law will take its course. Otherwise, he should face consequences for irresponsible conduct in the public space,” Effiong added.
