The Federal Government has reaffirmed its resolve to deepen healthcare financing reforms and safeguard national health priorities despite the steady decline in donor contributions to Nigeria’s health sector.
A report by Radio Nigeria yesterday indicated that federal authorities are increasingly concerned about the shrinking pool of external funding, which has historically supported critical programmes in immunisation, maternal health, disease surveillance, and epidemic preparedness. Officials noted that with global economic pressures affecting development partners, Nigeria must accelerate the shift toward more sustainable domestic funding models.
According to the report, the government is strengthening mechanisms for improved budgetary allocations, innovative financing frameworks, and strategic partnerships aimed at reducing the country’s long-standing reliance on donor agencies. These measures, policymakers argue, are essential to maintaining momentum toward universal health coverage and protecting vulnerable populations.
Stakeholders also highlighted ongoing reforms within key health institutions, including the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and state-level primary healthcare boards, as part of broader efforts to enhance accountability, mobilise resources, and ensure efficient service delivery.
The government emphasized that while donor support remains welcome, Nigeria must prioritise self-sufficiency by widening its domestic revenue base, strengthening public–private partnerships, and ensuring that health sector funds are transparently managed and effectively deployed.
Experts quoted in the report warned that the decline in donor support presents both a challenge and an opportunity—challenging because of funding gaps in essential programmes, yet an opportunity for Nigeria to redesign a more resilient and nationally driven healthcare financing architecture.
The Federal Government, however, assured that it would continue to invest in critical infrastructure, expand access to quality healthcare services, and safeguard the gains recorded in public health, even as external funding continues to drop.
