The Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari, has refuted allegations that he diverted the sum of ₦16.5 billion meant for the reconstruction of the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Addressing journalists in Jalingo, the Minister, who spoke through his lead legal counsel, Dr. Ibrahim Iffiong, described the claims circulating on social media as unfounded, mischievous and deliberately crafted to mislead the public. He stressed that the allegations have no factual basis and were designed to smear his reputation.
Iffiong disclosed that the Minister has already instituted legal action against the individual behind the accusation, a social media activist identified as Abdulmumunin Imam. He noted that despite making weighty allegations, Imam has failed to provide any evidence and has instead gone into hiding.
The Minister’s counsel emphasised that making accusations without proof constitutes a serious offence under Nigerian law. He stated that the decision to pursue legal action was necessary to provide a deterrent against the rising trend of unverified and malicious claims on social media platforms.
Maigari reiterated that while freedom of expression and access to information are guaranteed, such freedoms must be exercised responsibly. He warned that any breach of the Cybercrime Act would attract the full force of the law.
It would be recalled that Imam had alleged that the Minister was plotting to arrest him for criticising the government over the delayed reconstruction of the Namnai Bridge in Gassol LGA.
