Nigeria is confronting a severe blood shortage, with the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA) warning that only 60 percent of the country’s demand for blood is currently being met. The 40 percent deficit, the agency said, is placing lives at risk, particularly for patients undergoing surgery, accident victims, and mothers facing complications during childbirth.
Dr. Amina Yusuf, Director-General of NBSA, attributed the shortfall to low levels of voluntary blood donation and overreliance on family replacement donations, which have proven inadequate. She called on Nigerians to embrace regular voluntary donation, stressing that community participation is vital to saving lives.
Hospitals across major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, are reporting delays in critical transfusions. Doctors are being forced to ration blood units, raising concerns over preventable fatalities if the shortage persists. Health experts warn that without immediate intervention, the situation could deteriorate further.
In response, NBSA announced plans to launch a nationwide blood donation drive targeting schools, universities, workplaces, and religious institutions. Mobile blood collection units will also be deployed to reach underserved and remote communities, aiming to increase donor turnout and reduce the widening supply gap.
Dr. Yusuf emphasized that blood cannot be synthetically produced, underscoring the need for consistent voluntary donations. She urged civic organizations, youth groups, and religious bodies to actively mobilize members, highlighting that each donation could mean the difference between life and death.
