A Nigerian military aircraft conveying 11 personnel has been detained in Burkina Faso following an alleged violation of the country’s airspace, ThisDay has learnt.
Authorities in Ouagadougou said the aircraft entered Burkinabe airspace without the requisite clearance, prompting its interception and subsequent grounding at the Ouagadougou International Airport.
Although the Nigerian military is yet to issue an official statement, defence sources hinted that the aircraft was on an authorised mission and may have experienced communication challenges before entering Burkina Faso’s airspace.
Security officials in the West African nation reportedly took custody of the personnel pending diplomatic clarification between both governments.
The incident has triggered immediate engagement through established bilateral and ECOWAS channels as Abuja moves to resolve the matter and secure the release of its personnel.
The detention comes at a time when regional airspace management has grown increasingly sensitive, particularly among Sahel nations grappling with heightened security concerns.
Further details are expected as consultations continue between Nigerian and Burkinabe authorities.
