Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has officially opened its 13th Convocation Week with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Alade Jimoh, unveiling fresh academic milestones, infrastructural progress and renewed appeals for government intervention in key areas affecting the institution. The briefing held at the Muhammadu Buhari Main Library brought together top management, journalists and stakeholders.
Professor Jimoh announced that a total of 8,119 students will graduate this year, including 7,618 first-degree holders and 501 postgraduate students. The undergraduate category features 82 First Class graduates, 1,986 Second Class Upper, 4,195 Second Class Lower and 1,355 Third Class graduates. He added that 75 PhD candidates are part of this year’s postgraduate output, describing the achievement as a major boost to human capital development.
The VC highlighted the successful take-off of KWASU’s new campuses in Osi and Ilesha-Baruba, calling it a significant step in strengthening the university’s presence across Kwara State. He commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for driving the multi-campus vision, and praised host communities for welcoming staff and students warmly.
On academic progress, Professor Jimoh disclosed that the university’s fourth-year medical students have resumed clinical training at the upgraded KWASU Teaching Hospital. He also confirmed that the institution’s first two sets of law graduates have been called to the Bar. In research and innovation, he revealed that KWASU scholars won major grants and successfully built a fully fabricated prototype electric vehicle, which will be displayed during the convocation exhibition.
The VC further announced that TETFund has approved a N1 billion special intervention for completing the Library Annex, while all 11 faculties now operate modern smart classrooms. The CBN-donated Central Laboratory is near completion, and a 600-bed hostel built through Public-Private Partnership is already in use.
However, despite the progress, Professor Jimoh raised concerns over the dangerous Shao–Malete road, where some motorists reportedly drive against traffic. He appealed to the state government to consider constructing a flyover to prevent accidents. He also requested more hostels, extended internal roads and additional security posts. According to him, new security measures introduced after recent incidents in Malete have restored peace and improved vigilance.
The VC appreciated staff unions, the media and host communities for maintaining stability and supporting the institution’s development. “Industrial harmony remains non-negotiable. We value the partnership and commitment of everyone contributing to KWASU’s growth,” he said.
