EFCC Arraigns Former Labour Minister Over N583.6m Contract Fraud

EFCC/Chris Ngige – 12, 2025

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, on an eight-count charge bordering on alleged contract fraud amounting to N583,682,686.

Ngige was brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, where the anti-graft agency alleged that he approved and supervised contract awards that violated procurement guidelines and led to substantial financial losses to the Federal Government.

According to the EFCC, the former minister was involved in questionable contract processes linked to several projects executed during his tenure. The agency accused him of “criminal breach of trust, abuse of office, and fraudulent contract inflation.”

The former minister, however, pleaded not guilty to all eight charges read to him.

Following his plea, the prosecution counsel informed the court that the EFCC was ready to open its case. He argued that the charges were weighty and urged the court to give accelerated hearing to prevent delays.

But the defence counsel moved a formal application for bail, insisting that Ngige had consistently honoured EFCC invitations and posed no flight risk. He further urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms.

After hearing both arguments, the presiding judge adjourned ruling and ordered that Dr. Ngige be remanded in EFCC custody pending the court’s decision on his bail application.

The case has been adjourned to a later date for continuation of hearing.
