The Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Gombe State, Hon. Keftin Amuga, has felicitated with former Defence Minister and elder statesman, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd.), on his 88th birthday, describing him as an enduring voice for Nigeria’s oppressed.
In a statement issued yesterday, Amuga said Danjuma’s influence in national affairs remains unmatched, noting that age has never diminished his relevance or commitment to the Nigerian project. “There is no age limit in politics as you celebrate your birthday,” he said.
He commended the retired General for his longstanding political interventions through strategic endorsements, stressing that Nigeria still requires his active involvement to “re-subdue the oppressors of Nigerians” and defend the rights of ethnic nationalities.
Amuga argued that Danjuma shares the same age bracket with former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Muhammadu Buhari, Bola Tinubu, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, pointing out that age has not prevented them from engaging actively in politics.
According to him, despite their ideological differences with Danjuma, these leaders consistently seek his endorsement, underscoring the weight of his political influence and moral authority.
He noted that Danjuma possesses a more compelling ideological blueprint for the liberation of Nigeria’s marginalised groups and the restoration of freedom of worship, saying he remains a witness to the General’s steadfast commitment to justice.
Amuga maintained that it was no longer sufficient for Danjuma to support individuals who later compromise his ideals, insisting that the elder statesman must now “lead decisively or anoint the next President of Nigeria,” as previous endorsements have not yielded the desired outcomes.
He recalled Danjuma’s pivotal role in the emergence of former President Obasanjo—both as Military Head of State and later civilian President—as well as his influence in the elections of Goodluck Jonathan and the late Muhammadu Buhari.
Amuga expressed concern over the increasing lobbying within the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) for support of the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 elections, despite what he described as worsening economic, political and security conditions.
He urged Danjuma to take a direct role in steering the Nigerian project, beginning with the emergence of an ideological and patriotic leadership within the Middle Belt Forum to provide direction for ethnic nationalities and the nation at large.
