In a decisive move to safeguard children’s health, the Taraba State Primary Healthcare Development Agency is to launched a statewide polio vaccination campaign targeting children aged 0–5 years.
Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday in Jalingo, Nafiu Umar, Head of the State Emergency Routine Immunization Coordination Centre (SERIC), announced that the exercise will run from December 13 to 16. He lauded journalists and community influencers for their role in the success of the recent Rubella vaccination campaign.
Meanwhile Jennifer Dabo, UNICEF’s representative in Taraba State, described the previous campaign as unprecedented in turnout and urged the same level of public awareness for the upcoming polio vaccination drive.
Also speaking Dr. Tamo Yaro, in his presentation, explained that the polio vaccination will focus on children under five, while other integrated immunization services will cover children aged 0–23 months. He advised parents to disclose any underlying health conditions, as children with health challenges will not be vaccinated.
Victoria Danbaba, the Agency’s Public Relations Officer, warned against myths and misinformation surrounding vaccination. She emphasized that while polio vaccines are globally accepted, some communities remain skeptical, making public sensitization crucial.
Nigeria was certified free of wild poliovirus in August 2020, yet circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks continue in some states due to low routine immunization coverage. Health authorities stressed that campaigns like Taraba’s remain critical to sustaining polio-free status and preventing fresh outbreaks.
The Agency urged all parents and caregivers to ensure their children participate in the vaccination exercise to protect them against polio and other preventable diseases.
