Leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have reaffirmed their resolve to halt the wave of military coups threatening democratic governance in the sub-region.
The commitment was reiterated at a recent ECOWAS summit, where heads of state and government expressed grave concern over the resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government in some member countries, describing the trend as a major setback to regional stability and development.

They restated the bloc’s zero-tolerance policy for coups, stressing that democracy remains the only acceptable form of governance within ECOWAS. The leaders urged the military across the region to uphold professionalism, respect constitutional order and remain subordinate to civilian authority.
ECOWAS leaders also underscored the importance of addressing the underlying causes of political instability, including insecurity, poor governance, youth unemployment and weak democratic institutions, noting that failure to do so could fuel further unrest.
The bloc pledged to strengthen its early warning systems, mediation mechanisms and diplomatic engagements to prevent political crises from escalating into full-blown takeovers.
The meeting ended with a call for unity and collective responsibility, as ECOWAS urged citizens, political actors and civil society organisations to defend democracy and reject any attempt to seize power through unconstitutional means.
