No fewer than four farmers were killed on Monday when suspected armed herdsmen attacked displaced persons harvesting crops at Vande village in Kofai-Amadu, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The traditional ruler of the community, Zaki Simon Terhemba, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, said the victims had returned to their farms in groups to harvest food when they were ambushed.

According to him, the farmers were conveyed to the farms in 11 vehicles and several motorcycles, with military escort provided to ensure their safety.
Terhemba said shortly after harvesting commenced, the farmers came under heavy attack by the assailants, who had earlier destroyed homes and farmlands in the area.
He further disclosed that 10 soldiers escorting the civilians reportedly ran out of ammunition during the encounter, leading to the capture of four soldiers by the attackers.
“One of the soldiers, identified as Valentino, who was operating a PKT machine gun, was shot and later killed. His body was mutilated and his weapon taken away,” he said.
When contacted, the Spokesperson of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, said the formation was investigating the incident.
He reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property, warning that those responsible for the violence would be dealt with decisively.
Investigations revealed that several communities around Kofai-Amadu and Chanchanji have been sacked, with over 100 persons reportedly killed since the commencement of the current harvest season.
