Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has extended Christmas greetings to the Christian community in the state, calling for unity, tolerance and sustained cooperation in advancing peace and development.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, the governor expressed gratitude to God for the preservation of lives and the relative peace that has made it possible for residents to celebrate another Christmas despite lingering security challenges.
Governor Zulum, who is currently on a four-day security and resilience-building tour of northern Borno, visiting military formations and insurgency-affected communities, said the period between the 2024 and 2025 Christmas celebrations had recorded remarkable progress in reconstruction and recovery.
According to him, the achievements were not limited to physical infrastructure but also reflected in improved peace, mutual goodwill and harmonious coexistence between Muslims and Christians, which he described as vital to restoring Borno’s prosperity and glorious past.
The governor underscored the importance of interfaith harmony, referencing a recent high-level consultative meeting with the leadership of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), aimed at strengthening collaboration with religious bodies in addressing insecurity and promoting lasting peace.
“Borno has unique family dynamics where people of different faiths live under the same roof, share meals, celebrate milestones and grieve losses together,” Zulum said, stressing that the state’s strength lies in these bonds that transcend religious differences.
In line with his administration’s commitment to fairness and inclusivity, the governor announced support for the Christian community and non-indigenes, including free transportation to various parts of the country, humanitarian assistance to over 6,000 vulnerable Christians, cash gifts to widows and orphans, as well as sponsorship of Christian pilgrimage and other interventions.
He urged all residents of the state, irrespective of religious affiliation, to unite in the collective pursuit of lasting security, peaceful coexistence and social harmony, describing them as the foundation for sustainable reconstruction, recovery and development in Borno State.
