A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has condemned the government’s silence over a recent US air strike on Nigerian soil, accusing President Bola Tinubu of abdicating his role as Commander-in-Chief.
In a joint statement, the groups questioned Nigeria’s sovereignty and raised fears over civilian safety, citing reports that debris from the strike landed on farmlands in Sokoto and Kwara states.
The CSOs faulted the President, Service Chiefs, and National Assembly leaders for being absent or silent, leaving the Minister of Foreign Affairs to justify the action, which they said undermines democratic oversight.
Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, they stressed that the government’s primary duty is the security and welfare of Nigerians. They demanded transparent investigations, public disclosure, and compensation for affected communities.
The statement warned that mismanagement of the crisis could deepen national tensions and concluded that if leadership cannot secure the country, they should step aside.
