The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State has accused Governor Caleb Mutfwang of political opportunism following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal of the mandate freely given to him by the electorate.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Choji Felix, the PDP confirmed that it officially received a letter notifying it of the governor’s resignation from the party on January 2, adding that the letter was delivered through the chairman of the PDP in Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area.
The party faulted the governor’s decision, saying he placed personal political considerations above the collective interest of the people of Plateau State and the ideals of the party that supported his emergence as governor.
According to the PDP, the governor neither consulted nor informed the party leadership before defecting, contrary to claims circulating in some quarters, stressing that there was no constitutional justification for defecting while retaining the office secured on the PDP platform.
Describing the defection as a threat to democratic accountability, the party warned that switching parties while in office weakens the will of the electorate and sets a dangerous precedent in Nigeria’s democratic practice.
The PDP also cautioned the APC against embracing Governor Mutfwang, noting that such a move would amount to endorsing what it described as a betrayal of public trust.
Meanwhile, former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, has reassured party members that the PDP remains stable despite the governor’s exit, saying the leadership of the party in the state remains committed to internal democracy and inclusive governance.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Mutfwang had not publicly responded to the PDP’s criticism of his defection.
