The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has unveiled the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of the 2026 local government elections in the state.
In a statement on Friday, the Chairman of the commission, Plangji Cishak, announced that the elections will be conducted across the 17 local government councils on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The commission said the elections are being organised in line with Sections 15, 19, 21, and 33 of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, Section 197(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022. PLASIEC added that the election date complies with the legal requirement that local government polls must be held at least 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing office holders.
According to the commission, party primaries for the nomination of candidates will take place from 7 to 12 March 2026, while political parties are scheduled to collect nomination forms from 13 to 17 March 2026. Submission of nomination forms will follow between 18 and 19 March, and the publication of personal particulars of candidates is fixed for 21 March 2026.
Screening of chairmanship candidates and their running mates is scheduled for 23 and 24 March 2026, while councilor candidates will be screened from 25 to 28 March 2026. The final list of nominated candidates is expected to be published on 9 April 2026, with campaigns by political parties commencing on 11 April 2026 and ending at midnight on 7 September 2026, two days ahead of the elections.
Furthermore, PLASIEC indicated that the official register of voters will be published on 21 July 2026, while the notice of poll is set for 17 August 2026. The commission called on political parties, candidates, and the electorate to adhere strictly to the timetable to ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
