The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Nicholas Rume, has commended officers and soldiers of the brigade for their resilience and dedication in confronting security threats within their area of responsibility.
Rume gave the commendation during the 2025 Nigerian Army West African Social Activities (WASA) held at the brigade’s headquarters in Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, where he highlighted recent operational successes recorded by the troops.
He described WASA as a long-standing tradition of the Nigerian Army that brings together personnel, their families and members of the public in a relaxed atmosphere, while promoting unity and showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. According to him, the celebration also provides an opportunity to reflect on achievements recorded in the line of duty.
“It is a time to come together not only to celebrate our achievements and successes, but also to strengthen our bonds and forge new friendships,” the brigade commander said.
Rume disclosed that troops of the brigade had successfully restored peace to several communities previously overrun by bandits, noting that residents of such areas can now go about their daily activities without fear. He added that the achievements underscored the commitment of the Nigerian Army to safeguarding lives and property.
He also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, and the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for their sustained support and cooperation with the Nigerian Army in the fight against insecurity.
The colourful WASA event featured cultural displays and a friendly tug-of-war competition between female soldiers and officers’ wives, which was won by the officers’ wives. Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, retired Brigadier-General Salihu Bello, commended the brigade, describing the celebration as a symbol of unity, resilience and collective resolve in addressing security challenges, while reaffirming the state government’s commitment to continued partnership with the Nigerian Army.
