The GAMMUN Centre for Care and Development Nigeria has called for increased collaboration with the media to raise awareness about hypertension and promote healthy lifestyles in Kano State.
The initiative, known as the Kano Hypertension Advocacy Initiative (KHAI), aims to educate the public on hypertension and its prevention, treatment, and management.
To ensure the success of the campaign, GAMMUN inaugurated a group of media fellows tasked with leading a comprehensive and sustainable advocacy effort across the state. The goal is to strengthen efforts to prevent and control hypertension, ultimately reducing its impact on the population.
Executive Director of GAMMUN, Mr. Tulari Tine, stressed the organization’s commitment to addressing the hypertension burden in Kano. He highlighted the importance of continuous media engagement and called for greater budgetary allocation from the state government to improve services and access to treatment.
“We are advocating for government support to expand hypertension services, provide free medications to those already under care, and scale up the program to cover all 22 LGAs in Kano State,” Mr. Tine said.
Identifying hypertension as a “silent killer,” Mr. Tine urged residents to prioritize regular blood pressure checks, as many people unknowingly live with the condition. He also emphasized the importance of physical exercise and a healthy lifestyle in managing hypertension.
“The current challenges people face can distract them from their health, but frequent blood pressure checks and a healthy lifestyle are key to preventing hypertension-related complications,” he added.
The project is also collaborating with local legislators and traditional institutions in Kano to increase the reach and impact of the initiative.
Hypertension remains a major global health concern, with the World Health Organization (WHO) attributing over 17.9 million deaths annually to cardiovascular diseases linked to high blood pressure. In Nigeria, approximately 44.9% of adults are living with hypertension.
Funded by the Global Health Advocacy Initiative (GHAI), an initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund, and Bloomberg Philanthropies, the KHAI project is committed to fostering a more comprehensive and sustainable approach to hypertension prevention and management in Kano State.
The project’s collaboration with the media aims to create lasting awareness and encourage healthier lifestyles across the state.
