A Kaduna-based journalist, Abdullahi Alhassan, has criticized former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, alongside the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), over their criticism of Northern states for closing schools during Ramadan.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna, Alhassan expressed his disappointment with Sowore, accusing him of being ignorant of Nigeria’s federal system.
He emphasized that Nigeria practices federalism, allowing each state to make decisions based on its own history, environment, beliefs, and traditions.
Alhassan stated that it was within the rights of Northern states to close schools during the holy month of Ramadan, pointing out that such decisions do not undermine the importance of education.
He explained that the closure of schools during Ramadan aligns with the cultural and religious values of these states, and that education authorities in those regions are responsible for ensuring that students cover the necessary syllabi in time for their final exams.
He also criticized Sowore and other critics for misunderstanding Nigeria’s federal system, where states have the autonomy to implement policies that suit their specific needs.
Drawing a parallel with the United States, where laws vary from state to state, Alhassan urged those criticizing the school closures to learn about federalism and the principles of governance in Nigeria.
Alhassan concluded by advising Sowore, as a presidential aspirant, to better understand the country’s federal structure, as a lack of such knowledge would be detrimental to leadership.
