A group under the auspices of Neutral Minds for Nigeria’s Political Growth and Development has called on the Zamfara State government to arrest APC chieftain, Sani Abdullahi Wamban Shinkafi, for allegedly defying a state order banning political gatherings.
The order, issued in February 2025 by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, aimed to curb escalating insecurity in the region. A press statement from the governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Broadcast, Media, and Public Affairs, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, announced a ban on all political activities following a security breach in Maru Local Government Area.
In response to this, the group, led by National Coordinator Obed Bawa, emphasized the importance of upholding government directives for peace and stability in the state, urging the authorities to take action against anyone violating these orders.
The group alleges that on February 5, 2025, Shinkafi inaugurated his political movement, the “Wamban Shinkafi Democratic Fronts,” at his Gusau residence, violating the state’s directive. The group argues that the event, which was broadcast on various media platforms including MAIBIRADI TV and FARA’A TV, has increased political tensions in the state.
According to Bawa, Shinkafi’s statement at the event, which included criticisms of the APC’s Zamfara chapter and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, is potentially destabilizing and warrants immediate action. Bawa further noted that Shinkafi’s intention to run for Zamfara State Governor in 2027 under the APC could further inflame political tensions at a sensitive time.
Shinkafi, however, denied violating any executive order, claiming that no official white paper prohibited political gatherings in the state. He asserted that the gathering in question was a meeting of his organization, not a political party event, and therefore did not pose a security threat.
Shinkafi also criticized President Tinubu’s administration for neglecting Zamfara State in key political appointments, despite its significant support in the 2023 elections. He described the lack of appointments as a failure to politically reward the state for its contributions to Tinubu’s victory.
The controversy continues to fuel debates over political freedoms, security concerns, and the role of government in managing such sensitive issues in Zamfara.
