NEWSAN partner Taraba Assembly Speaker for improve water sanitation and hygiene

The Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN) has on Friday took an advocacy visit to speaker of the Taraba House of Assembly, Hon John Kizito Bonzena, to help prioritize and improve water sanitation and hygiene in Taraba State.

Taraba NEWSAN Coordinator, Mr Boniface Koson disclosed this during an advocacy visit in Jalingo, which follow up on NEWSAN’s “WASH Charter for Demands” that was signed by some political candidates during the 2023 general elections with Hon John Kizito Bonzena inclusive.

The visit which according to the Coordinator was aimed at leveraging the charter to encourage and remind those who signed “WASH Charter for Demands” to prioritize climate resilient and water sanitation services in their various communities.

Boniface maintained that, “NEWSAN members are experts in various fields of WASH and over the years have trained facilitators, consultants and technical support personnel towards achieving this goal.

“We are here to solicit for your support and inclusion for line budget towards ending open defecation in Taraba state between 2025 to 2030. Taraba State is at the centre of the northeast, with migrants from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe and other neighboring states and there are inadequate facilities. Hence, the need to advocate for collaboration in order to achieve the said target.

Also speaking, the NEWSAN National deputy coordinator, Mr Princewill Mordi, urged the government to ensure that safe and drinking water is available for residents.

He emphasized the need for improved public perception, increased political prioritization, adequate funding, and strong policies and institutions.

On his part, Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, and member representing Zing, Hon John Kizito Bonzena thanked the team for reminding them of their task ahead.

Represented by the deputy Clerk, Mr Atsobra Musa, Bonzena noted that, along side the administration of Governor Agbu kefas has shown commitment in mitigating the challenges of water.

“Since it is time for budget we will make sure we include water sanitation and hygiene in various ministries so as to minimize if not eradicate open defecation to have safe and clean drinking water and also safe environment for our people. We are ever ready to partner with you to achieve what you want to achieve,” he said.
