Plateau State, in partnership with UNICEF and other key stakeholders, has launched a large-scale immunization campaign aimed at reaching all eligible children, particularly those who have not received any vaccines since birth. The campaign, dubbed the “Big Catch-Up Immunization,” is designed to tackle the growing concern of zero-dose children and to ensure every child is protected from preventable diseases.
The ongoing campaign has seen a strong turnout, with parents actively bringing their children to designated vaccination points where health teams are administering vaccines such as penta and ROTA. The exercise is particularly focused on areas with high numbers of unvaccinated children, including several local government areas (LGAs) in the state.
At the campaign’s flag-off in Zawan Community, the wife of the Chairman of Jos South LGA, Mrs. Mercy Silas Patrick, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the state, local governments, communities, and development partners in addressing immunization gaps. She noted that the campaign seeks to ensure no child is left unprotected from preventable childhood diseases.
Mrs. Patrick further encouraged parents to take full advantage of the immunization services being offered, while also promoting the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and proper nutritional feeding for children’s health and development.
In Jos South LGA, where the campaign is being closely monitored, community members like Rahila Pam are playing a vital role in spreading awareness. A mother of four, Mrs. Pam has made it her mission to educate other parents about the importance of vaccination, using her children as examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the vaccines.
Despite some resistance to immunization in certain households, community mobilizers like Safiya Ibrahim are seeing positive changes through continuous engagement and one-on-one discussions with caregivers.
The “Big Catch-Up Immunization” campaign is set to run until February 18, 2025, with the aim of significantly improving immunization coverage and protecting children across Plateau State from preventable diseases.
