In an effort to promote better understanding of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), the Attah Sisters Helping Hand (ASHH) Foundation, a Bauchi-based Civil Society Organisation (CSO), recently sensitized 50 household heads in Dass Local Government Area, Bauchi State.
The initiative, aimed at encouraging informed engagement between parents and their adolescent daughters, focused on fostering open discussions and breaking societal taboos around SRHR.
The sensitization session, supported by Global Affairs Canada in partnership with Plan International’s ASPIRE Project, aimed to create a more supportive environment for adolescent girls by ensuring they have access to accurate information and guidance.
Rita Anyim, a technical officer at ASHH, explained the importance of involving parents in creating safe spaces for children to discuss sensitive issues. “Open communication allows children to share their thoughts and struggles, which is vital for their growth,” Anyim said.
She also stressed the need for clear guidelines on behavior, friendships, and responsibilities to establish a healthy family dynamic.
The event provided practical measures for both parents and girls, including leadership by example, financial awareness within families, and overcoming cultural barriers to open discussions. Anyim encouraged parents to guide their children in avoiding negative peer influences, adopting financial responsibility, and fostering values like respect and empathy.
One of the participants, Mallam Haruna Ibrahim, a father of two adolescent girls, expressed his newfound commitment to addressing SRHR topics openly with his daughters. “I’ve learned that if you don’t teach your children the right things at home, they might learn them the wrong way outside. I’m grateful I attended this event,” Ibrahim shared.
The sensitization program is part of ongoing efforts to create awareness and empower families to support the healthy development of adolescent girls in the region.
