The Nineteen Seventeen Northern Consensus Movement (NSNCM) has reiterated its commitment to peace, unity, empowerment, and development in Nigeria during its first press conference of 2025. Addressing members of the press, the group highlighted key activities and engagements from the past year while outlining its priorities for the new year.
Speaking at the event, NSNCM leadership emphasized the importance of harmonizing and integrating the Northern region to strengthen socio-political, cultural, and economic ties across Nigeria. The movement, which consists of 596 affiliated registered associations from the Nineteen Northern States and Northerners residing in the Seventeen Southern States, has played an active role in advocating for policies and interventions to address regional challenges.
NSNCM outlined several press conferences and engagements held in the past year, including:
Creation of the North West Development Commission – The movement actively campaigned for its establishment, submitted recommendations to the National Assembly and the Presidency, and later welcomed its creation. A congratulatory letter was also sent to the Pioneer Minister, expressing readiness for collaboration.
Killings of Northerners in Lokpanta – NSNCM condemned the violence and called for urgent government intervention.
Compensation for Victims – The movement followed up on compensations for victims of violence, including those affected by the IPOB, ESN, Sasha Akinyele Market, and End SARS incidents.
Attacks on Northerners in the South – The group condemned the destruction of Northern-owned businesses and properties in the Southern region.
Call for a Ministry of Northern Regional Development – Letters were submitted to the President and National Assembly, urging the creation of a ministry dedicated to addressing Northern development challenges.
Nigeria-Niger Border Closure – NSNCM raised concerns about the impact of the border closure on commerce and livelihoods.
Beyond advocacy, the movement also intervened in critical issues, including:
Land Dispute in Owerri – The group mediated a dispute involving the Hausa community and Alhaji Auwal Baba Suleiman (Sarkin Hausawa of Owerri). Following a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the case was resolved in favor of the complainants.
Electric Tricycles Initiative – NSNCM participated in stakeholder discussions with NOGALSS in Abuja on the rollout of electric tricycles, ensuring that Northern entrepreneurs benefit from the initiative.
To provide a comprehensive record of its activities, NSNCM announced plans to launch a photo booklet documenting its engagements, interventions, and achievements. The publication, available in both electronic and print formats, will serve as a reference for stakeholders.
The movement reaffirmed its dedication to regional and national development, urging continued collaboration with policymakers, security agencies, and community leaders to foster peace and economic progress.
“Our mission remains clear—to unify, empower, and develop the Northern region while strengthening Nigeria as a whole,” the leadership stated.
NSNCM called on the government and relevant authorities to address pressing issues affecting Northerners and ensure equitable development across all regions of the country.
