Tension has gripped the herder community in Kwara State following the assassination of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the state.
Abubakar was shot dead by unknown gunmen at the entrance of his residence in Oke Ose, Oke-Oyi, on the night of March 8, 2025.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing that five expended 7.62mm shells were recovered from the crime scene.
Abubakar’s remains have been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) mortuary.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Victor Olaiya, condemned the assassination and assured that a thorough investigation is underway.
“We will not rest until those responsible for this heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice,” he stated, urging residents to remain calm and assist law enforcement with any information that may aid in the investigation.
In a statement, the State Secretary of MACBAN, Hon. AbdulAzeez Muhammed, expressed deep sorrow over Abubakar’s death, describing it as a tragic loss.
He called for prayers for the deceased and justice for his family, praying that Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him eternal peace.
Abubakar, a prominent figure in the state’s livestock sector, is survived by two wives and six children.
His murder has raised concerns about the security of herders and other vulnerable groups in the region, prompting calls for increased protection and vigilance across the state.
