The People’s Democratic Party in Gombe State has described Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s outburst over the strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the State University (GSU) as the height of insensitivity of a leader.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya had during a live TV media chat with local stations over the weekend in Gombe, severally threw attacks on the striking lecturers of the State owned University who are voicing out their extremely poor working conditions and demanding their unpaid packages.
Reacting over the TV engagement with the media stations, PDP, the main opposition in the State expressed it’s disappointment in the engagement which it described as lacking substance and genuine interaction.
The Public Relations Officer of the PDP, Abdulkadir Ahmad Dukku in a media release said “Throughout the chat, the Governor employed his trademark dismissive rhetoric, failing to exhibit the humility and accountability expected from a leader in his position”.
The PDP said, “Instead of addressing the pressing challenges facing our state, he chose to launch unprovoked attacks on the striking staff of Gombe State University, accusing the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of sabotaging Federal Government policies.
“These dedicated professionals have tirelessly contributed to the institution’s success, often under less-than-ideal working conditions. Their commendable efforts deserve recognition not derision”, it slammed the Governor.
The PDP also stated that the Governor’s remarks concerning the new minimum wage and the so-called ₦10,000 palliative for civil servants were vague and lacked the clarity that citizens urgently seek.
“Many individuals who attempted to engage in the conversation via social media found their questions selectively ignored, casting doubt on the authenticity of this purportedly open dialogue”, it alleged.
The main opposition political party in the State said it was also disappointing to witness an administration (APC) that prioritizes image over action, leading to a lack of meaningful engagement with the electorate.
“The chat ultimately served as a missed opportunity to address critical issues that his Government has neglected, such as education, healthcare, water, agriculture, youth and women’s empowerment, and workers’ rights—issues that resonate deeply with the people of Gombe State”, Abdulkadir stressed in the release.
It said, “As a responsible opposition party, the PDP is committed to holding the Government accountable. We will be publishing the comments and requests submitted by Gombe citizens during this chat, shedding light on the voices that were silenced and the important questions that went unanswered.
“We urge Governor Yahaya to adopt a more constructive approach to governance, one that fosters genuine dialogue and prioritizes the welfare of the citizens he was elected to serve.
“The people of Gombe State deserve leadership grounded in accountability, transparency, and a sincere commitment to addressing their needs”, the statement concluded.
