The Olu Adeyemi Foundation (OA Foundation), in collaboration with the Stand to End Rape Initiative (STER), organized a high-level media roundtable in Ilorin aimed at amplifying women’s representation in Nigerian politics.
The event, held at NOKTEL Hotel, gathered media professionals, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and General Managers of Diamond FM and Radio Kwara, to strategize on leveraging the media to promote gender inclusivity in governance.
Olusegun Adeyemi, Founder and CEO of the OA Foundation, emphasized the urgent need to support the recently proposed Extra Seat Bill, which seeks to reserve seats for women in state and national legislatures.
“This initiative is not just about filling seats but about transforming governance through the inclusion of women.
The media plays a pivotal role in breaking barriers and advocating for this systemic change,” Adeyemi said.
Edith Isiek, Research, Monitoring, and Learning Officer at STER, underscored the importance of strategic media engagement in ensuring that women’s voices are amplified in the political space.
“This initiative is about ensuring every Nigerian woman’s voice is heard and their rights to political participation upheld.
The media holds the key to making this a national priority,” she stated.
Discussions at the roundtable focused on the implications of the Extra Seat Bill and how it could address the glaring underrepresentation of women in Nigerian politics.
Media practitioners highlighted the critical role of storytelling in reshaping public perceptions and building momentum for the bill’s passage.
Goodwill messages from NUJ leaders, Diamond FM, Radio Kwara, and other stakeholders reinforced their commitment to using media platforms to advocate for gender equality and push for policies that empower women.
Participants agreed that increasing women’s representation should not only focus on numbers but also on creating impactful roles for women in governance. They resolved to launch media campaigns to raise public awareness about the Extra Seat Bill and other issues affecting women in politics.
The OA Foundation and STER reaffirmed their dedication to empowering women through policy advocacy and community engagement. The event concluded with a joint commitment by media practitioners to spotlight stories that inspire inclusive governance and provoke positive action for gender equality.
