A Federal High Court sitting in Gombe has ordered the National Executives of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) from dissolving the Gombe State Committee under the Chairmanship of Rambi Ibrahim Ayala.
Yunusa Aliyu Wade, leading five others, got the court restraining order Monday (09/12/2024) pending the determination of the plaintiff’s motion on notice filed before the court which is presided by Justice T.G. Ringim.
The Gombe State chapter of the NNPP had been engulfed in an internal crisis which had led to the resignation of the leader of the party and Governorship flag bearer in the 2023 general election, Honourable Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki, a former member of the House of Representatives who recently declared for the PDP.
The national headquarters of the party had in a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) dated Friday 22nd November, 2024, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent in Gombe, notified it of its scheduled Wards, Local Governments and States Congresses in Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, Taraba and Oyo states begining from 10th to 14th December, 2024 where elections into the various levels of the party were expected to be conducted too.
But reacting over the court order, an excited Chairman of the party in Gombe State, Rambi Ibrahim Ayala, welcomed the Federal High Court’s restraining Order, saying, it is a big gain for democracy.
He told newsmen that the decision of the National Office of the NNPP to dissolve the executives was not only illegal but undemocratic which contravened the NNPP Constitution and the 1999 Nigerian constitution as amended.
He explained that there was no letter of notification or accusation of any wrong doing from the national office to the State executives adding that they woke up to a social media post, dissolving the Ward, Local Government and State Executives of the party, a development he said made them approach the court for redress.
He also described the move as a political sabotage aimed at undermining the party’s boldness in the State despite having a complete and vibrant structure at all levels.
According to him, “All our efforts and commitment is to ensure NNPP becomes an active and vibrant political party that can not only rub shoulders with the ruling party, but seize power through democratic means come 2027.
“As one who wish to contest for election, I’m not after the leadership of the party, all I’m concerned is to make the NNPP fully active, and ensure all is done on the basis of its constitution and the rule of law”, Barrister Rambi added.
Efforts to hear from Sulaiman Hamza, Secretary of the care taker committee put in place by the NNPP National Office to man the party affairs in the state proved abortive, as calls through his phones were not answered.
The four-point prayer presented by the six applicants; Yunusa Aliyu Wade, Daniel Solomon, Samaila Ibrahim, Ahmed Usman, Adamu Garba and Paulo Barnabas Lamiya on Friday 6th December, 2024, sought for an interim interlocutory Injunction restraining the defendants, their agent and privies of any person acting on their behalf from substituting the names of the plaintiffs as the Wards, Local Governments and State executive committees of the NNPP in Gombe State pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiff’s motion on notice filed before the court.
The court fixed 27th January, 2025 for hearing on the applicants’ motion on notice.
