The Kwara State chapter of the Federation of Muslim Women’s Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) has been recognized as the best-performing state in community development and humanitarian activities.
The Amirah of the Association, Hajia Nimat Labaika, disclosed this during the formal opening of the Step Down of the 39th Annual National Conference held in Ilorin.
Hajia Labaika attributed the recognition to the association’s Annual Ramadan community outreach and women empowerment initiatives.
She highlighted collaborations with international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have facilitated various health interventions, including awareness campaigns, prevention, and treatment of malaria, HIV, and tuberculosis.
“Through these partnerships, we have empowered 100 people living with HIV and AIDS. Indigent women, especially petty traders across the 16 local government areas, were also supported through zakat and donations from philanthropists,” she said.
The Amirah appealed to philanthropists to increase their support for FOMWAN’s humanitarian activities, stressing that the association’s work is vital to improving lives in the state.
Conference Addresses Women and Insecurity The conference, themed “Women and the Challenges of Insecurity”, featured a keynote lecture by Prof. Abdulquadir Abikan, Director-General of the National Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Abuja. Prof. Abikan, represented by Dr. Muhammad Kamaldeen of the University of Ilorin, lamented the global prevalence of femicide, describing it as a persistent violation of human rights.
“Femicide, the intentional killing of women due to their gender, remains disturbingly prevalent. In 2022 alone, the United Nations recorded 89,000 intentional killings of women and girls worldwide, with 55% of these murders committed by intimate partners or individuals close to the victims,” he noted.
Prof. Abikan emphasized that insecurity affects women disproportionately, highlighting the need for women to strengthen their roles as primary educators within the family.
He called on men to collaborate with women in building safer societies, adding, “We must work together—across faiths and backgrounds—to dismantle the structures that perpetuate violence against women.”
Lecturer at the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS), Abdullahi Ghali, urged stakeholders to tackle insecurity from the grassroots by focusing on family and individual values.
He also advised mothers to provide quality upbringing for their children in line with Islamic teachings.
The event included free medical checkups, HIV/AIDS screenings, hypertension tests, and distribution of free medications, underscoring FOMWAN’s commitment to health and wellness in the community.
“Women Must Be Empowered to Secure Society” – Experts Speakers at the event called for concerted efforts to address insecurity, noting that women’s empowerment and proper family orientation are critical to societal development.
