The Nigerian Army’s Sobi Cantonment in Ilorin hosted the 2024 West African Social Activities (WASA) celebration on Saturday. This annual cultural event highlights Nigeria’s diverse heritage, promotes unity, and serves as a reflection on the Army’s achievements.

Maj. Gen. Sumaila Ibrahim, Commandant of the Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology (NAISET), underscored the importance of WASA as a platform for strengthening camaraderie among officers, their families, and host communities. He lauded the event’s role in showcasing Nigeria’s cultural richness through various performances and social interactions.

“The event provides an opportunity for officers and men of the Nigerian Army to wine and dine with their families, friends, and host communities, while also celebrating our achievements as Nigerians,” Ibrahim stated.

Similarly, Maj. Gen. Umar Babangida, Provost of the Nigerian Army College of Education (NACOE), praised the collaboration between security agencies in Kwara State, which he credited for maintaining peace and stability. He emphasized WASA as a moment for the Army to reflect on its successes and reinforce its values of discipline, unity, and excellence.

“This platform reminds us of our collective identity as Nigerians, enriched by our varied traditions yet united by shared values. It is a reminder that discipline and togetherness are the foundation of excellence,” Babangida said.

He further commended NAISET and NACOE for their contributions to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and professional development while celebrating the nation’s cultural heritage.

The event featured vibrant traditional dances, music, and artistic displays that captured the essence of Nigeria’s ethnic diversity. Babangida concluded the celebration with prayers for continued unity and more milestones to commemorate in the future.

WASA, a long-standing tradition of the Nigerian Army, aims to foster unity and strengthen relationships between military personnel and their host communities, reflecting the Army’s commitment to peace, discipline, and cultural appreciation.
