The Nasarawa State Government has sealed off Timadix Geomin Consult Nigeria Limited, a lithium mining company operating in Kokona Local Government Area, citing alleged violations of mining regulations. This action has sparked a dispute between the state government and the company.
Timadix Geomin Consult is accused of failing to comply with the state’s mining guidelines. Acting Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe stated during a press briefing in Lafia that the company’s operations were unauthorized, adding that a government investigation revealed irregularities in the company’s documentation, including forged signatures on consent letters from traditional rulers.
The Managing Director of Timadix Geomin Consult, Tim Eldon, refuted these claims during a press conference. He insisted that the company had obtained all necessary licenses and followed proper procedures before commencing operations. Eldon also called on the Federal Government, particularly the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, to mediate and ensure a fair resolution to the dispute.
Dr. Akabe emphasized that the decision to shut down Timadix aligns with efforts to combat illegal mining in Nasarawa State and protect resource-rich communities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring all mining activities comply with established laws and guidelines.
“We are open to investors, but they must respect our laws,” Akabe said. He also assured residents that monitoring of mining operations in the state would be intensified, and any company found engaging in illegal activities would face similar actions.
The dispute highlights the tension between state and federal authorities regarding mining regulations, as well as the challenges of ensuring compliance in resource-rich regions. It remains to be seen whether federal intervention will lead to a resolution or further escalate the conflict.
