The Kwara State Government has reiterated its dedication to maintaining a clean and green environment, emphasizing the need for proper waste management in markets to safeguard public health.

This commitment was highlighted during a routine environmental exercise led by the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) on Thursday in major markets across Ilorin, the state capital.
Hajia Idayat Folorunsho, the Acting General Manager of KWEPA, represented by the Chief Environmental Officer, Alhaji Yunusa Jida, stressed the importance of traders adhering to proper waste disposal practices and maintaining consistent sanitary measures in markets.
“The market is a critical meeting point where everyone depends on for foodstuffs and other groceries. Keeping it clean is essential to prevent the outbreak of diseases,” Hajia Folorunsho remarked.

She warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, highlighting its potential to attract pests and increase the risk of disease outbreaks.
Traders and shop owners were reminded to observe the mandatory weekly environmental sanitation every Thursday from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, as directed by the State Ministry of Environment.
Hajia Folorunsho further cautioned that violations of the state’s environmental laws would attract strict sanctions, urging full compliance to ensure public health and safety.

As part of its efforts, the KWEPA team inspected markets including Itamadu, Maraba, Ipata, and Oja-Oba to monitor the sanitation exercise and enforce compliance with environmental regulations.
