Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has initiated a strategic partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to enhance maternal and child healthcare services in the state.

According to Ismaila UBA Misilli, Director-General of Press Affairs at the Government House Gombe, the meeting signaled the beginning of a comprehensive collaboration aimed at reducing maternal mortality, improving service delivery, and strengthening healthcare institutions to build human resources for health.
Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with global organizations to transform Gombe’s healthcare system. He emphasized that maternal and child health remains a top priority and expressed confidence that this partnership would accelerate progress in reducing preventable deaths and improving overall healthcare outcomes.

To ensure effective implementation, the Governor directed Deputy Governor Manassah Daniel Jatau, who chairs the Task Force on Primary Health Care, along with Commissioner of Health Dr. Habu Dahiru and other relevant government agencies, to engage with the delegation and develop a sustainable maternal and child health intervention framework tailored to the state’s specific needs.
The Bloomberg Philanthropies team was represented by Dr. Neena Prasad, Maternal and Reproductive Health Lead, and Samantha Lobis, Senior Advisor on Maternal Health. The BMGF delegation included Rodio Diallo, Deputy Director for Family Health; Silvia Von Lewis, Deputy Director for Maternal, Newborn, Child Nutrition and Health; and Jennifer A-Boateng, Senior Programme Officer for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health and Nutrition.

This intervention comes at a critical time, as maternal and child health indicators in the region remain poor. However, organizations such as UNICEF and other global health partners have been actively working to address these challenges, and this new partnership is expected to further strengthen healthcare services for mothers and children in Gombe State.
