The Kano State Government has confirmed the death of three people during a demolition exercise at Rimin Zakara, near Bayero University Kano (BUK).
Eyewitnesses reported that on Sunday night, security operatives and a demolition task force stormed the area to remove structures allegedly built on university-owned land. However, resistance from the community led to violent clashes, resulting in casualties.
Speaking on the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the deaths.
The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, also acknowledged the casualties and announced that the government would set up a Committee of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The operation was carried out at the request of BUK, the rightful owners of the land, to evacuate illegal occupants. The issue has been ongoing for about 40 years, with previous attempts to clear the land proving unsuccessful,” Waiya stated.
He further explained that despite prior eviction notices, some residents refused to vacate and allegedly engaged hoodlums who attacked security personnel during the operation.
The commissioner assured that the government has identified 840 legal occupants, who will soon receive official grant title certificates.
While expressing condolences to the affected families, Waiya urged residents to remain law-abiding and assured them that the inquiry committee would ensure transparency in resolving the matter.
