Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the appointment of Dr. Hamidu Ahmed Kara as the new Head of the State Civil Service. This follows the statutory retirement of Mr. Paul Maigida Tino on Monday, February 3, 2025.

Dr. Kara, a seasoned medical professional and administrator, hails from Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area. Born on August 31, 1968, he attended Nurul-Ulum Primary School, Gembu (1974–1980) and Government Secondary School, Gembu (1980–1985). He later pursued GCE Science at the College of Preliminary Studies, Yola (1985–1987) before gaining admission to the University of Maiduguri, where he graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
After completing his housemanship at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Dr. Kara was mobilized for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and served at St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua, Akwa Ibom (1996–1997). He later worked at Fletcher Memorial Catholic Hospital, Ikot-Abasi, before joining Mobil Clinic, Eket, in 1997.

Returning to Taraba State, he was employed at the State Specialist Hospital (now Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo) for a year before being appointed to head the Government House Clinic, Jalingo. He served as Physician to the Governor from 1999 to 2007 and was reappointed from 2007 to 2015.
His career progression saw him rise to Chief Medical Officer at the Health Services Management Board and Director of Hospital Services at the Ministry of Health in 2016. He was appointed as a Permanent Secretary in 2022, serving in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS), Home Affairs, and Special Services Department. He was later posted to the Health Services Management Board and, most recently, supervised the Ministry of Tertiary Education from December 6, 2024, as Supervising Permanent Secretary.

With an extensive background in healthcare and public service, Dr. Kara is expected to bring experience and leadership to his new role as Head of the Civil Service.
He is married with three wives and nine children. His hobbies include reading and sports.
The appointment was announced by Chief Barr. Gebon Timothy Kataps, Secretary to the Government of the State.
