The Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to upholding high-quality standards for commodities, particularly at the Dawanau International Grains Market, a leading grain hub in Africa. This commitment was highlighted by the state’s Commissioner for Commerce, Industries, Trade, and Investment, Alhaji Shehu Sagagi, following an inspection of adulterated sesame seeds in the market.

During the inspection, Sagagi issued a stern warning to marketers, emphasizing that any form of adulteration would not be tolerated. “The government will not spare anyone found adulterating grains in this market. Adulteration is prohibited in Islam, and the Governor has directed that anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law,” he stated.

Sagagi further emphasized the importance of Dawanau in the global grains market, noting that the state is determined to support the market’s growth to enhance economic development both in Kano and across Africa. He confirmed that discussions are already underway with the Commodity Exchange Commission to improve the market’s standards.

In a related development, Alhaji Muntaka Isa, Chairman of the Dawanau International Grains Market, highlighted the strategic role of the market in Nigeria and Africa’s food distribution value chain. He also noted significant developments in the market, such as new drainage systems and office buildings funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). However, Isa pointed out that the lack of reliable electricity supply remains a major challenge and called for state government support in completing ongoing power infrastructure projects, including the installation of power poles and cables from Bichi to the market.

Mr. Anthony Obi, Area Commander of the Federal Produce Inspection Services, also underlined the importance of ensuring that grains exported from the market are free from adulteration to maintain Nigeria’s good international image.

The Kano State Government’s efforts to strengthen Dawanau International Grains Market reflect its broader goal of improving business activities and promoting sustainable economic growth for the state and the continent at large.
