Labour unions in Nigeria have been called upon to be more proactive in advancing the welfare of their members and contributing to national progress. This call was made by Comrade Mumuni Onagun, Senior Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Labour Matters, during the inauguration of newly elected branch executives of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Kwara State Council, in Ilorin.
Speaking at the event, Comrade Onagun emphasized the vital role of union leaders in fostering unity and collaborating with the government to ensure good governance. He assured that the Kwara State Government remains committed to prioritizing workers’ welfare and encouraged labour leaders to work together with the administration to achieve common goals.
The Kwara State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Muritala Saheed Olayinka, who is also the National Vice President for the North Central Zone of MHWUN, reaffirmed the labour movement’s commitment to defending the rights of its members.
In his address, Comrade Bolatito Isaac Oladele, the Kwara State Chairman of MHWUN, highlighted the importance of accountability, transparency, and discipline within the union. He urged the newly elected branch chairmen to uphold these values, warning that any branch leader found violating the union’s constitution or financial policies would face consequences.
“This occasion is historic,” Comrade Bolatito said, “as it marks the first time that newly elected branch chairmen and secretaries are officially mandated under the State Council to uphold the union’s ideals across various branches.”
Bolatito also called for the adoption of the newly approved 65-years retirement age and 40 years of service for workers, in line with the federal government’s directive. He urged the Kwara State Government to implement this policy for the benefit of workers in the state.
The event also featured recognition of veteran union leaders for their invaluable contributions to the growth of MHWUN in Kwara State, and Comrade Prince Sunday Oyewole, Head of Department, Health Education, Local Government Authority, advised the newly elected executives to lead by example and uphold the union’s principles.
As the union continues to grow, the leadership emphasized the need for modern trade unionism, urging executives to stay informed about relevant policies and public service rules to advocate effectively for their members.
