The Federal Government is intensifying its efforts to tackle youth unemployment by promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Alhaji Nasiru Sani-Gwarzo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, made this statement at the closing ceremony of the 2nd edition of the TVET Camp in Jalingo on Saturday.
Represented by Dr. Muyibat Olodo, Director of the Technology and Science Education Department, Sani-Gwarzo outlined that the specialized training in rock tiling and interlocking is aimed at fostering innovation and creating jobs for young Nigerians. He added that the certification awarded to participants would enhance their qualifications, boosting their prospects for employment and academic progression.
“The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Education, is dedicated to equipping Nigerian youths with practical skills to reduce unemployment,” Sani-Gwarzo said. “This initiative underscores our commitment to driving creativity and innovation, particularly in modern construction and design.”
Dr. Augustina Godwin, Commissioner for Education in Taraba, commended the program, describing the training as an essential step towards securing a better future for young people. She urged the students to combine the technical skills with strong moral values to contribute positively to society.
“I am confident that with such training, our youths will not face the challenges of unemployment in the future,” Godwin stated, expressing hope that the initiative would be sustained. She also highlighted the commitment of Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba, who has prioritized education in the state through a free education policy.
Participants of the camp, such as Master Mohammed Hayatu from Federal Science Teacher’s College, Jalingo, and Miss Hauwa Yahaya from Federal Technical College Gashua, expressed their gratitude for the opportunity, with both vowing to apply the skills acquired to become self-employed.
The camp concluded with a demonstration by participants, showcasing their new skills in tiling and interlocking at the Federal Technical Colleges in Jalingo.
This initiative marks a significant step in the Federal Government’s broader strategy to empower young Nigerians and reduce unemployment through skills development and education.
