The Wife of the Kwara State Governor, Professor Ambassador Olufolake Abdulrazaq, has called for stronger laws and collaborative efforts to protect the rights of the girl child and combat violence against them.

Speaking in Ilorin during the launch of Dr. Zainab Bolajoko Balogun’s book “Safeguarding the Girl Child Against Societal Vices”, Mrs. Abdulrazaq emphasized the importance of gender inclusion in Kwara’s development. She urged parents, teachers, guardians, government agencies, and parastatals to work together to protect girls from abuse and exploitation.
Represented by the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Mrs. Abdulrazaq highlighted the numerous challenges girls face, stressing that the state’s survival hinges on the active participation of women. She called for a comprehensive strategy to address abuse, discrimination, and violence against girls.

“The girl child faces countless challenges that require urgent action. We must ensure that laws are in place to protect them from exploitation and abuse,” she stated.
In her address, the Kwara State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Afolashade Opeyemi, represented by the Director of Child Affairs, Hajiya Alabi Idiat, assured that the state government has enacted strong laws to safeguard girls and will continue to protect them from all forms of violations.
Dr. Lawal Olorungbebe, Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Engagement, emphasized that child abuse should not be viewed as a family curse. He encouraged parents to allow children the freedom to express themselves, which would help adults understand and address potential issues.

Dr. Balogun, the author, explained that her passion for improving the lives of girls led her to write the book. She hopes it serves as a call to action for society to provide girls with the opportunities they need to thrive.
“My upbringing and strong family values inspired me to write this book. Every girl, if given the opportunity, can make a meaningful contribution to society,” Dr. Balogun concluded.
