The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested 15 individuals connected to sophisticated land-grabbing syndicates in the state.
The Commission’s Chairman, Barr. Muhyi Magaji, revealed the arrests during a press briefing in Kano, where he outlined the ongoing investigation into fraudulent land transactions worth an estimated 20 billion naira. The syndicates involved in these activities include high-ranking officials such as senior judicial officers, a serving High Court Registrar, court staff, lawyers, security personnel, and other government officials.
One of the key suspects, Sulaiman Aliyu, is reportedly connected to over 50 land-related cases and is currently assisting investigators. Magaji highlighted that the syndicates employed various deceptive tactics, including forging documents and obtaining default judgments in court to unlawfully seize land. In some cases, they went as far as impersonating deceased individuals to carry out the fraud.
Magaji praised the integrity of some officials, particularly a security agent who rejected a N2 million bribe from one of the suspects. The Commission also acknowledged the support of the Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Dije Aboki, who assisted in the detention of several court personnel implicated in the scandal.
The Kano Anti-Corruption Commission has promised swift legal action against the suspects, with plans to charge them to court in the coming weeks. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the fight against corruption in the state.
